Join two of our LAFlash community members as they showcase their recently developed app. Together, they will present “Developing the Counting Book and creating graphics for the Dirty Kitchen Cooking Timer apps for the Blackberry PlayBook Tablet.”

Brad Wallace has a hard earned degree in dabbling from the Dabologna Institute. He was a filmmaker for 15 years before quitting in disgust and moving on to dabbling in all things involving computer arts. Graphics, photography, web design,
effects/animation and dark electronic music are his current ruminations. And now apps! The Dirty Kitchen Cooking Timer App: http://www.bradwallacedesign.com/dkTimer/
Check out his portfolio at www.bradwallacedesign.com and his scary music at www.myspace.com/procedure1.

shaRon sachse creates art and expressions for the digital canvas, motion and web using a suite of Adobe tools. She studied design and photography at MCAD (Minneaplois College of Art and Design) and returned to the classroom at SMC for a degree in Web Design/Development.

She got her start working with video at the local cable station in the early 8o’s producing, editing and teaching. Today, she does front-end development incorporating video, animation and rich interactive experiences on multiple screens.
Extending creativity to the new innovative handheld devices shaRon is also building apps. Come see the NEW Blackberry PlayBook tablet and the apps built. We will talk about the designing and developing process using Flash and beta hardware. shaRon’s portfolio can be seen at www.shaRon-folio.com

Do not expect a sales pitch, we like to hear your experience with your current IDE, what we can do to make your workflow, team and coding more efficient. We want to learn from your needs and share our know how as an Agency and Software developer in exchange. It is an opportunity to learn something both ways and, why not … find the time to have few drinks together after work!”

5 Things to Improve Flash Catalyst

12:49 pm in Blog by Omar

I’ve been meaning to post some of these points for a while after having finished a few projects where skin implementation was done using Flash Catalyst.  While the Flex Spark architecture along with Flash Catalyst has really improved designer to developer workflows there are still things that are left to be desired from Flash Catalyst.  I must point out though that despite these flaws/annoyances Flash Catalyst has had mostly positive affects on development for our team at Almer/Blank.  So without further adieu, here are five things I think would really improve Flash Catalyst. Android Flash Player OTA Updates

11:23 am in Blog by Omar

During last week Adobe started to update Flash Player plugin installs on Android phones automatically over the air, that is, without the phone’s owner specifically clicking on the Update button.

A couple of people asked me how to set up the phone to allow the updates, as it is not on by default and the phone’s owner must allow the updates to happen automatically. First open the Market application and tap on the Downloads menu. In this menu, find the Flash Player listing.

Market Downloads

Once you find the listing tap on it to see the details for Flash Player.  At the top there is a checkbox for Allow Automatic updating.  If you turn this on your phone will automatically update Flash Player when it finds a new version available.

AS3 only project modified ObjectUtil

4:22 pm in Blog, Code, Tutorials by Omar

After working in Flex for so long I’ve grown used to some of the great utilities that Flex provides. One of the classes I think is very useful during debugging is mx.utils.ObjectUtil. Using “ObjectUtil.toString()” you can very easily trace out objects that you want to inspect the contents of. So I took the mx.utils.ObjectUtil class and modified it to remove the dependencies on Flex framework classes so that it works in AS3 projects only. Not only in AS3 projects in Flex Builder and Flash Builder but in the Flash IDE as well.

AS3 Project Preloader in Flash Builder

8:39 pm in Blog, Tutorials by Omar

I recently had a couple of friends ask me some questions about adding preloaders for AS3 projects, so I decided to write up some sample code for adding a preloader to an AS3 project. Read the rest of this entry →
