Rick Miller is a Senior Solutions Engineer for Education at Adobe Systems where he helps Adobe’s education customers find the solutions they need to enhance the pedagogical experiences of their students. Before working at Adobe Systems, Rick taught Photoshop/Digital Imaging at the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, and Digital Design at Cal Poly Pomona University, so he’s cognizant of the unique challenges that face educators. Rick is an Adobe Certified Expert in Photoshop, Lightroom, Acrobat X, and Acrobat Connect. Additionally, Rick is an expert in color management. Moreover, Rick is a professional photographer who is certified on the Leaf and Phase One digital backs, and trains users on the Hasselblad digital back. Rick continues to consult with Law Enforcement agencies in the Forensic application of Photoshop.

Adobe MAX at the L.A. Convention Center was amazing and there’s a lot of movement at Adobe. In case you couldn’t make it to the event or haven’t seen the session recordings online yet, Omar will provide information on his experience from Adobe’s annual event. He will cover trends and news all around the Flash platform. Very interesting what direction Flash is taking…

// Patrick Matte LIVE!: The making of the Visa Memory Mapper

The Visa Memory Mapper is a web application made with Adobe Flash that lets users create an animated journey with pictures and music. Patrick Matte will talk about how the project was completed in seven weeks, starting with how the idea for this project came about and all Flash work that was done through the final delivery. You’ll see some preliminary prototypes and you will learn about working with Flash and the Facebook, Flickr, Youtube and Google Maps APIs. You’ll also learn about working with Adobe AIR and FFMPEG to render dynamic flash animations to video. The presentation will also include some work with Away3D and Adobe PixelBender.

Join two of our LAFlash community members as they showcase their recently developed app. Together, they will present “Developing the Counting Book and creating graphics for the Dirty Kitchen Cooking Timer apps for the Blackberry PlayBook Tablet.”


Brad Wallace has a hard earned degree in dabbling from the Dabologna Institute. He was a filmmaker for 15 years before quitting in disgust and moving on to dabbling in all things involving computer arts. Graphics, photography, web design,

shaRon sachse creates art and expressions for the digital canvas, motion and web using a suite of Adobe tools. She studied design and photography at MCAD (Minneaplois College of Art and Design) and returned to the classroom at SMC for a degree in Web Design/Development.

She got her start working with video at the local cable station in the early 8o’s producing, editing and teaching. Today, she does front-end development incorporating video, animation and rich interactive experiences on multiple screens.

As part of the FDT 4 World Tour, Powerflasher Bruno Fonzi and award-winning application developer Steven Sacks will stop by LAFlash this month. With the recent release of the new version FDT 4.5 they will talk about the cross-plattfrom challenge, an overview from the Design & Software engineering perspective + Powerflasher current and future strategy for FDT. Rumors of Flash’s demise have been greatly exaggerated.

The truth is, Flash on mobile is alive and well. The world of Flash on devices is booming, with Flash content running on phones and tablets — even the iPhone and iPad! And there’s a whole new generation of televisions and set-top boxes, like GoogleTV, that also run Flash.

Flash remains the closest thing to a write-once-publish-everywhere technology in existence. LAFlash together with Almer/Blank are here to help you understand the current landscape, with a pair of FREE events. Come to the Executive Session, and send your development team to the tech session later in the evening, so that you can learn and start publishing immediately!

Almer/Blank will be opening the event with a few words from CTO R Blank.

From 4 to 6 PM Join Almer/Blank CTO, R Blank, and Project Director, Tim Brady, as they explain exactly what platforms are supported by Flash, what options exist for publishing to each, and demonstrate Flash content running on a variety of devices for the attendees to experience Flash on these new platforms first-hand.

From 7 to 10 PM Join Omar Gonzalez, LA Flash Manager and Senior Software Architect at Almer/Blank, as he walks developers and designers through the new features available from Adobe, in Flash Professional, Flash Builder and InDesign, that allow you to publish your content and apps to all these new devices.

A few announcements from the User Group Managers Omar and Harald regarding the latest on the Flash Platform and LAFlash member benefits.

// Raffle, Networking, Food and Beer!

As always, we will host a raffle, including Adobe give-aways, free tickets to FITC events and a SourceMate 2.0 license. The event ends with a networking session.

Los Angeles Adobe User Groups Present: ADOBE USER GROUPS CS 5.5 LAUNCH EVENT

On Friday June 3rd, the Los Angeles Adobe User Groups are welcoming Adobe Evangelist Paul Trani to give an insight of the new features of Creative Suite 5.5. Adobe’s Community Manager Aaron Houston will also join the event to give you the opportunity to ask questions. There will be an official event post on LAFlash soon.
